O Hospital da Universidade de Emory, em Atlanta, nos EUA, anunciou nesta terça-feira um transplante completo de mão. A estudante Linda Lu, 21, de Orlando, na Flórida, foi submetida ao procedimento no dia 12 de março. Ela perdeu o membro quando ra criança.
Este é o primeiro transplante do tipo em um hospital de Atlanta. O procedimento envolveu várias equipes de cirurgiões, anestesistas enfermeiros e auxiliares. Duas equipes --uma dedicada à paciente e outra ao doador do braço-- concluíram a cirurgia com sucesso após 19 horas.
O transplante envolveu a conexão de várias estruturas, incluindo ossos, tendões, nervos, vasos e, finalmente, a pele. Após o procedimento, a norte-americana foi colocado em observação por 48 horas e agora está usando um suporte de alta tecnologia, enquanto aprende a dominar as funções da mão nova.
Lu vai começar a reabilitação no Emory e deve passar os próximos três meses em Atlanta. Durante a entrevista coletiva, ela afirmou que entende que o novo membro nunca será uma mão normal, mas espera que ajude em atividades cotidianas.
"Agora eu estou cheia de emoções e não sei descrever como me sinto, se é felicidade, esperança ou gratidão", disse.
"Este é um momento emocionante para a nossa paciente e sua família. Lu já está se referindo ao transplante como 'minha mão'", disse Linda Cendales, professora de cirurgia da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Emory.
"Isso representa um grande sucesso para a universidade e para a medicina", declarou o senador republicano Saxby Chambliss. 'O procedimento que eles demonstraram irá beneficiar muitas pessoas, incluindo membros de nossas forças armadas que sofreram lesões no Iraque, Afeganistão e outros lugares.'
PRIMEIRO TRANSPLANTE DE MÃO
O primeiro transplante de mão do mundo foi realizado em 1964 no Equador, antes do desenvolvimento dos medicamentos imunossupressores. O paciente era um marinheiro que teve que amputar a mão transplantada duas semanas após o procedimento, em razão da rejeição de tecidos.
O transplante seguinte aconteceu na França, em 1998, e durou mais de dois anos, até que o paciente parou de tomar os remédios imunossupressores e pediu para a ter a mão removida.
Nos EUA, o primeiro procedimento foi realizado em 1999, e contava com Linda Cendales na equipe médica. O paciente vive com a mão transplantada até hoje e é o caso mais duradouro deste tipo de cirurgia. Cendales ainda participou do segundo transplante de mão no país, em 2001.

This is the first transplant of its kind in an Atlanta hospital. The procedure involved several teams of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and assistants. Two teams - one dedicated to the patient and the donor's other arm - completed the surgery successfully after 19 hours.
The transplant involved the connection of several structures, including bones, tendons, nerves, vessels, and finally the skin. After the procedure, the U.S. was placed under observation for 48 hours and is now using a high-tech support, while learning to master the functions of the new hand.
Lu will begin rehabilitation at Emory and must spend the next three months in Atlanta. During the news conference, said she believes that the new member will never be a normal hand, but hopes will help in everyday activities.
"Now I'm full of emotions and I can not describe how I feel, whether it is happiness, hope and gratitude," he said.
"This is an exciting time for our patients and their families. Lu is already referring to transplant as 'my hand,'" said Linda Cendali, Professor of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine at Emory University.
"This represents a great success for the university and for medicine," said Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss. 'The procedure showed that they will benefit many people, including members of our armed forces injured in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. "
FIRST HAND TRANSPLANTThe first hand transplant in the world was held in 1964 in Ecuador, before the development of immunosuppressive drugs. The patient was a sailor who had to amputate his hand transplanted two weeks after the procedure, because of tissue rejection.
The following transplant took place in France in 1998 and lasted more than two years, until the patient stopped taking immunosuppressive drugs and asked to have the hand removed.
In the U.S., the procedure was first performed in 1999 and featured Linda Cendali medical staff. The patient lives with his transplanted hand today and is the longest case of this type of surgery. Cendali also participated in the second hand transplant in the country in 2001.
